What can local police do after a suspected scam?

A quick way to pause, verify the situation independently, and choose a safer next step.

Good records and quick contact with the right organization can make the next steps clearer, but no report guarantees an investigation or recovery.

What to do

  • Write down what happened, when it happened, and which payment or account was involved.
  • Contact the affected bank, payment provider, or online service through an official route.
  • Use ReportFraud.ftc.gov for consumer fraud or IC3.gov for cyber-enabled crime when those routes fit the situation.

Keep the decision in your control

You do not need to decide immediately whether a contact is genuine. End the unexpected conversation, find a trusted contact route independently, and ask for help before sending money or information.
