What are the warning signs of a romance scam?

An online relationship can feel real and meaningful. Concern should grow when affection turns into secrecy, repeated crises, or requests for money.

Romance scams work by building trust over time. That makes them harder to recognize than a single suspicious text. The goal is not to judge the relationship. It is to notice whether the other person is using the relationship to control decisions.

Watch for a pattern, not one detail

A person may avoid meeting or video calls, claim to live or work far away, and develop strong feelings quickly. Later, an emergency, travel problem, investment, or business opportunity may appear.

One detail may have an innocent explanation. A repeating pattern of excuses plus money requests deserves a pause.

Money changes the situation

Do not send money, cryptocurrency, gift cards, or account access to someone you have not met and independently verified. Be especially careful if the person asks you to keep the request secret or move the conversation away from the original platform.

Do not receive and forward money for them. That can create additional financial and legal problems.

Ask for outside perspective

Talk with someone you trust before sending anything. A friend can help notice contradictions without insulting or embarrassing you.

If money was sent, contact the payment provider quickly through its official route. Report the account to the platform and consider reporting to the FTC.

The main idea

You do not need to investigate the sender yourself. Pause, verify the claim through a contact route you find independently, and use official help if money or information may be at risk.
